DAYTON, Ohio —

A rape that occurred near Sinclair Community College  during the weekend has police searching for a suspect and prompted the college to issue a campus-wide alert to students and faculty.

The incident reportedly happened at about 10 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Germantown Street. The victim, according to Dayton police, was a 15-year-old boy who is thought to have first encountered the suspect at an RTA hub.

“There was a man meeting the description of the suspect in that case who was in the RTA hub making inappropriate comments to the victim,” Dayton Sgt. Larry Tolpin said Monday. “The victim subsequently determined his bus pass had been misplaced and decided to walk home.

“He indicated he felt as though he was being followed,” Tolpin said. “He turned around and was physically assaulted by the suspect, and subsequently sexually assaulted as well.”

The suspect was described as a black male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, 20 to 29 years old with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt, denim jeans and black gym shoes.

The incident occurred near Sinclair’s Building 20, which houses fire science and automotive-oriented classes.

The college sent an email to students and faculty on Sunday and then a text message Monday morning. That is in compliance will federal law, Sinclair spokesman Adam Murka said. Notices also were posted in more than 70 locations on campus and on Facebook and Twitter.

“We have certainly worked to make our community aware of the incident,” Murka said. “That’s the important thing to do.”

The sexual assault was one of six reported during the weekend, Tolpin said. Three arrests have been made. Two of the related cases that also involve minors involve allegations that the sexual assaults date back several years. Police have suspects and arrests could be made in the near future, he said.

Anyone with information about the Germantown Street incident or any others is asked to call (937) 333-COPS.
