SHLEBY COUNTY —

Indictments have been handed down against the president and treasurer of the Shelby County Humane Society.

Mike Lescowitch, president, and Angela Bray, treasurer, were investigated for three months for felony theft. Lescowitch was indicted on one count of theft in office, a fourth-degree felony, and Bray with one count of theft, a fifth-degree felony.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the 501C3 nonprofit organization failed to file proper documentation to continue its nonprofit status and used the status for three years without authorization. Personal purchases were made under the status, and sales taxes were avoided, said Sheriff John Lenhart.

Purchases were for the personal gain of Lescowitch and Bray, according to a release from Lenhart.

Humane Society funds were used to purchase a Nintendo gaming system and Walmart gift cards that were later used to buy items such as groceries and cigarettes. Funds were also used to tow Bray’s personal wave runners and purchase tires for her vehicle. Her personal cell phone bill was also paid with the funds, Lenart said. The investigation also found a misuse of Humane Society credit cards.

Record keeping was negligent, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Some donations were not reported or deposited into a Humane Society account.

The misappropriated and misused funds totaled $18,485.92, Lenhart said.

The improper status issue will be turned over to the Internal Revenue Service for investigation.

The Humane Society’s two accounts and assets associated with those have been frozen due to a court order in the Shelby County Common Pleas Court.
