Springfield firefighters battle flames, bitter cold

By John Bedell

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

Springfield firefighters battled large flames and the bitter cold temperatures early Saturday morning.

A vacant house caught fire around 4:30 a.m on Karr Street near Lagonda Avenue.  The nearest fire station was only a few miles away, so crews were able to get on scene within a few minutes.

The fire was so big, firefighters decided to fight the blames from the outside, fire officials said. They also worked to keep fire from jumping to other buildings nearby.

Neighbors said this was the second house to catch fire in their neighborhood and they do not like that trend.

"It's pretty scary cause someone's setting fires around here," said Amanda Jacks.

No one was injured , residents or firefighters.  Investigators are trying to determine if the blaze was intentionally set.

The water used to fight the blaze quickly froze on the streets and sidewalks.
