Woman escapes after fire engulfs porch

Staff Report

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

The front porch of a woman's house caught fire on South York Street around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to officials.

The woman told News Center 7  that she woke up to use the restroom and discovered her front porch was engulfed in flames.  She said she grabbed her dog and ran out the back door of her house to safety.

Firefighters said when they arrived on the scene they found the porch to be fully engulfed.  The fire spread to a small portion of the first floor of the home, but the damage to the inside of the structure was minimal, according to firefighters.

Officials said the fire is suspicious due to the origin of the fire and the time of day it was reported.  Investigators were called to the home to help determine an official cause to the fire.

The homeowner believes someone may have intentionally set the blaze because she previously received threats.

No injuries were reported.
