Citizens help corral Springfield man in hit-skip

A Springfield man who police said was driving while intoxicated with his two children in the back seat tried to get away after he collided with another vehicle, but was apprehended with the help of the people in the car he hit.

Lindsey Stockdale, 45, was involved in the hit-skip at about 8 p.m. Monday near Motto-Mart on North Bechtle Avenue, police said Tuesday.  

Salvador Reyes of Springfield, decided to follow Stockdale's vehicle after Stockdale ran into him. Cecilia Rivera, a passenger in Reyes' car, called 9-1-1 and told police she noticed two 4-year-olds in the back seat of the vehicle that hit Reyes' car.

"This guy just crashed into us and ran away. Oh it was so freaking scary!" Rivera said to News Center 7's Jessica Heffner, recounting what she said to the 9-1-1 operator.

While on the phone, Reyes continued to pursue Stockdale for several blocks, finally blocking him off near a business.

According to police, Stockdale was so intoxicated that he could not stand once he got out of his car. He also admitted that he had consumed at least four beers, police said.

Stockdale, who was taken to the Clark County Jail, is being held on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, hit-skip, two counts of child endangering and driving without a license. Police ran a computer check on Stockdale and also discovered that there were active warrants for him on charges of prostitution, menacing, having no driver's license and failure to signal. 

The children were released to their mother, police said.
