BUTLER TWP. —

A portion of Englewood MetroPark off of National Road in Butler Township was closed for more than three hours Monday evening while the fire department and Dayton Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious object found in the grass.

A maintenance worker discovered a suspicious pipe-shaped object while mowing near a parking lot on Patty Road, according to MetroParks Lt. Adrian Sargent.

He said the worker alerted MetroParks police and they called in the Butler Township fire department and the bomb squad.

“We’ve blocked the park off. We’ve taken everyone out of the park,” Sargent said. “We don’t want anybody around the area in case it is a live ordinance or explosive device.”

Englewood MetroPark is divided into four sections: East, West, North and South. Sargent said the East Park portion is the part that was closed, while other sections remained open to the public.

“(The bomb squad) will evaluate to see what the object is and see if it’s dangerous or not,” Sargent said. The squad found that the object was a hollowed out steel pipe that was closed off at both ends. When investigators opened one end they found nothing inside the pipe, but detonated it as a precaution at about 6 p.m., Sargent said.

The main entrance to the park on National Road was closed off shortly after 3 p.m. and the park opened back up before 6:30 p.m.
