Teacher accused of assaulting student in wheelchair

A Meadowdale High School teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations she struck a student with cerebral palsy, school officials said.

The mother of the student said she was informed by the school that the incident occurred during breakfast on Wednesday.

“The lady just attacked him, that’s what the principal told me,” said Tamikio Burrage. Her son Keith is a junior at the school. He is in a wheelchair and does not speak.

Burrage said she is concerned the abuse may have been going on before Wednesday. She said her son had been having behavioral problems recently. “He’s been hitting. That’s not my son,” she said.

“My son can’t walk or talk,” Burrage said. “Was she abusing my son every time he’s going to school?”

Dayton Public Schools spokeswoman Jill Moberley did not release the name of the employee involved, and Burrage said neither the school or law enforcement will tell her the woman’s name. Burrage said she believes the teacher had daily contact with her son.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is investigating any possible criminal charges. Burrage said there is video of the incident, but she has not been able to view it.

She said she kept her son home on Thursday and will take him to the doctor Friday to make sure he doesn’t have any undetectable injuries.

“I just want to know why she’s not been arrested,” Burrage said.
