A traffic stop, foot chase and search warrant led to an arrest and drug seizure valued at over $20,000.

At approximately 8 p.m. Saturday night, a Montgomery County sheriffs’s K-9 unit pulled over a vehicle in Vandalia. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Darryl J Martin, ran from officers but was located after Martin attempted to hide a large amount of heroin, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The Montgomery County R.A.N.G.E. Task Force then served a narcotics search warrant at the Hawthorn Suites, 7070 Poe Ave. in Vandalia, where Martin was staying. News Center 7 has learned detectives recovered several ounces of crack cocaine, several ounces of heroin, one stolen handgun and a large amount of cash.

Martin was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and booked on drug trafficking charges. Additional charges will be reviewed with the county prosecutors office.
