Staff Report

DAYTON —

Police are trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol or a possible medical condition played a role in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday that sent two people to Miami Valley Hospital.

A 52-year-old male was driving a van at excessive speed north on Wayne Avenue near Glencoe Avenue when he came upon a line of vehicles stopped in front of him, Dayton Lt. Wendy Stiver told News Center 7.

The van swerved to the left, into the southbound lanes, and struck a pickup truck driven by a 22-year-old male. Both taken to the hospital suffering from injuries that were not considered to be life threatening, Stiver said.

Police were sent to the scene on a report of an accident with possible entrapment at about 5 p.m., according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center.

The driver of van is at fault and most likely will be cited for failure to control or crossing the center line, Stiver said.

Fire/rescue crews reported to police at the scene that the van driver was acting strangely, Stiver said, which could be consistent with drug or alcohol involvement. But it could also involve a medical condition, she said.

Police will follow up with the man at the hospital.

“We don’t know why he suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic,” Stiver said. “It’s very strange.”
