Wayne County, Ind., lifts open burn ban

Staff Report

RICHMOND, Ind. —

The ban on open burning, in effect for all of Wayne County since June 20, has been lifted effective immediately, the county’s Emergency Management Agency director announced Wednesday night.

The fire chiefs of Richmond and Wayne County put the ban in place because of excessively dry conditions that posed a significant risk for rapid fire spread.

While recent rains have not diminished the overall drought, they have helped to restore moisture to grass and other vegetation that has reduced the risk of uncontrollable fire spread, county EMA Director Fred Griffin said. All of the fire chiefs express their appreciation to the citizens of Wayne County for their cooperation and assistance during the burn ban.

Since the drought continues to impact the region, the fire chiefs are urging continued caution with all fires. If you must burn, follow state and local burning regulations.

As the drought continues, new burn bans may become necessary, according to Griffin’s office. The fire chiefs and other area officials will continue to monitor the situation and implement additional burn bans if hazardous conditions return.
