DAYTON —

One woman was taken to jail after she used a child as a human shield against Dayton police officers, according to a police report taken Saturday.

Two officers were sent to a home at about 4 p.m. on the 1500 block of McLain Avenue on the report of assault. When they arrived, a woman claimed that her roommate, 26-year-old Desirae Prewitt, punched her 10-year-old daughter and knocked her down the stairs. Medics arrived and cared for the girl, according to the report.

Allowed inside the house, police said Prewitt was standing in the living room and immediately started yelling at one of the officers. She then ran upstairs. Police ran after Prewitt ordering her to stop, but she refused.

According to the report, Prewitt then picked up her four-year-old daughter and ran to the back bedroom. The police officer chased after her and as he entered the bedroom, he ordered Prewitt to put down the child.

Screaming, Prewitt held her daughter out as a “shield” preventing the officer from getting to her, according to the report. The officer was able to calm her down and put her in handcuffs.

She allegedly kicked her roommate in the chest when police were escorting her from the house.

Prewitt was arrested and transported to the Montgomery County Jail and booked on suspicion of assault, child endangering, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
