Woman raped and robbed on street

By Katie Wedell

A woman reported to police that she was raped and robbed by a man she just met on Wayne Avenue Sunday morning.

The attack occurred at about 5 a.m. in the 800 block of Wayne.

The woman, whose identity is withheld for her protection, told police that she was walking in the area when a man approached and initiated a conversation. The two walked around together for a while before the attack occurred, police said.

The suspect, described as a bald, black man, about 35 years old and 5 feet 9 inches tall, got away with an unknown amount of cash.

The victim was injured in the assault.

The suspect was wearing a dark blue shirt and plaid shorts at the time of the attack.

“It is very rare to encounter a sexual assault by a stranger,” said Dayton Police Lt. Wendy Stiver. She said none-the-less, people should practice good personal safety by not walking alone if possible and always walking in well lit areas.

“If someone approaches you and they make you feel uncomfortable, get to a public place,” she said.
