ENGLEWOOD —

Police are on the lookout for a male believed to be in his 20s who ran off with jewelry after a sales clerk handed him the merchandise Wednesday afternoon.

According to a preliminary investigation, the suspect came into Rapp Jewelers, 7 W. National Road, at about 4:30 p.m. and pointed out jewelry he wanted to take a look at.

When the sales person took the merchandise from a display case and placed the jewelry in the man’s hand, he took off running from the store and headed east down to Main Street. There, police said they think he got into a getaway vehicle. Police said they aren’t sure whether the man was working with an accomplice.

“This is obviously an act of desperation,” Englewood Sgt. Mike Lang said Wednesday night. “This guy wasn’t thinking when he took the merchandise.”

The incident is being investigated as a felony theft of merchandise valued at more than $1,000, Lang said. Police hope to get a look at surveillance video on Thursday.

Anyone who saw anything near the business at the time of the incident is asked to call Englewood police at (937) 836-2678.
