Xenia Education support staff file strike notice

XENIA, Greene County —

The Xenia Education support staff officially gave the school board it's strike notice.

As a last effort to get the school board to come back to the negotiating table, the union has officially notified the board that they will stike starting November 10.

For the members of the XESP, the reality of having to go on strike is starting to set in.

XESP President Victoria Jones said, "It's very scary right now to think what could happen to everybody.  To us, the kids, the district."

XESP felt forced to file its 10-day strike notice with the school board in an attempt to bring them back  to the negotiating table.

The board put in place it's last best offer on Sept. 19 without XESP's approval and now the union said it's starting to see paychecks with changes like doubling insurance premiums.

Jones said, "They received checks on Friday that was for $36.  That wouldn't buy but one week's worth of gas.  How are they going to get to work the second week if they only bring home $36?"

The board held a 50-minute closed-door session on Monday night to discuss what to do about the strike, only to come back to the union and adjourn the meeting.

XESP member Dee Merz said, "It's uncalled for.  We didn't appreciate it at all."

The school board would not comment Monday night, but does have meetings scheduled the rest of this week.

No word at this time on whether they'll decide to negotiate or hire a strike management company.
