KETTERING, Ohio —
Gene Apple, 65, became unconscious after having a heart attack inside his truck with his foot on the accelerator and crashed, according to our partners at the Dayton Daily News.
Apple's truck erupted into flames and its tires exploded, firefighters said.
Apple was in critical condition at KMC Thursday night. He died Friday.
The Boonshoft Center for Medical Science garage was evacuated and the fire was contained to the second floor of the South Garage.
Kettering College was evacuated as a precaution, but no patient floors of the hospital were affected by the fire, the hospital said in a statement.
People with friends and family in the hospital were told they could not enter the facility due to an "emergency".
"My dad is here in the emergency room," Crystal Thomas said. "They told us that we couldn't come in, they were having an emergency."
Fire trucks barricaded the entrance to the parking garage for hours while smoke billowed from the second floor, just yards away from the emergency room.
Officials plan to re-open the garage today.
Kettering College was reopened Thursday evening.
