Man Pleads Guilty To Theft Charges

WAYNE COUNTY, Indiana —

A Wayne County man who was once accused of killing his girlfriend pleaded guilty to two separate crimes.

James McFarland, 26, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property and theft charges, police said.

He was arrested after police found him sleeping in a stolen car at a Wayne County lake. The theft charge stems from him not paying his bill after eating at a restaurant, police said.

McFarland faces two years in prison when he is sentenced.

He had been charged with murder in connection with the death of Erin Stanley of Centerville, Ind., nearly three years ago. Charges in that case were dismissed after a pathologist who performed the autopsy on Stanley made it clear that he could no longer say with a degree of medical certainty that Stanley had been killed.
