DAYTON —

Police in Dayton said they are trying to determine how a man caught on fire and was severely burned Wednesday afternoon after he showed up at a local market looking for help.

As area residents and public safety officials dealt with blizzard conditions, Dayton police responded at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Danner Market at Danner and Weaver avenues where a man was reportedly on fire.

Witnesses reported to News Center 7 they saw the man literally on fire while running down the street. The man had serious burn injuries on his upper body, face and hands, according to Dayton police. The 36-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, lives at St. Vincent. He was taken by life squad to Miami Valley Hospital where he is listed in critical condition, according to Dayton police.

About two hours after the incident, Dayton detectives and fire officials were at a vacant duplex in the 1000 block of Danner Avenue. Officers found the home filled with smoke and firefighters discovered and extinguished an active fire still burning inside.

News Center 7 is reviewing additional resources to uncover more details. The incident remains under investigation.
