Man Shot at Birthday Cookout

DAYTON, Ohio —

Police said a man is in critical condition at a local hospital after he was shot in the stomach and leg.

Authorities said just before seven o'clock Sunday night a blue Pontiac Aztek with five black males inside pulled up outside 410 Cherrywood Avenue.

Neighbors told NewsCenter 7 a man was celebrating his birthday with family members at cookout outside the apartment complex.

Police said some of the men got out of the car and walked up to the cookout, and began arguing with the guest of honor. At one point, detectives said, the argument turned violent and the suspects shot the victim.

Authorities said the suspects fled but were tracked down on Salem Avenue near Kenwood just minutes later by an observant police officer, who arrested the five men and found two guns inside the car.

Detectives believe the suspects are the same people who were reported shooting from a blue Aztek on Danner Avenue about an hour before the shooting on Cherrywood.

Police also said they don't believe the suspects knew the shooting victim.

Neighbors are stunned by the random act of violence. Colette Jackson said, "It was traumatizing to see it right across the street, to hear the gunshots and everything."
