DAYTON, Ohio —

John McCain's rally at the Nutter Center began with a rendition of "Happy Birthday" from the crowd of thousands. McCain turned 72 today.

The rally began shortly after noon at the Nutter Center at Wright State University.

Senator McCain said he is happy to be in Dayton to make an historic announcement because, "Dayton has contributed much to the history and the prosperity of America."

The Senator said he had many good candidates to select as his running mate. But, he selected a running mate, "That will shake up Washington and work for the people who are counting on us."

Then, that running mate, Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, was introduced and joined McCain at the podium.

Palin said, "I am proud to be standing next to the next President of the United States."

Palin introduced her husband, Todd, to the crowd. The couple is celebrating their 20th anniversary today. Palin said Todd is a production manager in the oil fields in Alaska, and a union member. Palin joked "I promised him a little surprise for our anniversary."

Gov. Palin talked about McCain's dedication to this country, his years of military service and his years as a prisoner of war. "My running mate is a man who has shown these qualities in the darkest of places in the service of his country."

For her part, Palin says the mission is clear; she is taking their message of reform to every part of the country. Palin said, "If you want change in Washington, and hope for a better America, we're asking for your vote for on the 4th of November. Join our cause and help our country elect a great man.
