Staff Report
MENDON, Ohio —
A toddler died Friday evening in Mendon when he apparently got into an above ground pool and drowned.
20-month-old Evan Quinn, of 312 South Washington St., was pronounced dead at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys after being pulled from the bottom of a pool in his family’s yard.
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which Sheriff Jeff Grey called a “terrible accident.”
In a statement Saturday, the sheriff said deputies were dispatched at about 9 p.m. because the boy’s father couldn’t find his son. Quinn had been playing near the pool and his parents were on the patio watching him.
His father reported that they took their eyes off him for a very short time and he was gone. They searched around the other side of the pool, the surrounding area and looked in the pool, but did not see him.
When emergency crews arrived, they rechecked the water, which was reportedly very cloudy, and spotted the boy on the bottom. He was pulled out and CPR was performed before he was transported to the hospital.
“Deputies are continuing their investigation,” Grey said. “But there is no indication or suspicion that this is anything except a tragic accident.”
