JAMESTOWN, Ohio —

Officials said a mercury spill at a local high school created a toxic scare on Thursday.

Investigators said a broken thermometer in a science lab forced Greeneview High School in Jamestown to dismiss classes early. They said the mercury spill forced two dozen students and two teachers were quarantined.

Officials said a freshman student broke a thermometer during fourth period on Thursday. School officials called hazmat crews who then helped clean up the mess.

Hazmat crews said that the amount of mercury spilled was well below EPA standards to be dangerous or harmful.

Officials said 24 students and two teachers were quarantined and forced to remove their clothing, but were given hazmat outfits to wear.

Officials said that classes were dismissed at 2 p.m. for the day. School administrators said classes will resume on Friday.
