Mother Of Murdered Marine Demands Action

The mother of a murdered Vandalia Marine is demanding action from Congress. On Capitol Hill Thursday, Mary Lauterbach testified at a hearing on sexual assault in the military. Lauterbach told lawmakers the military failed to protect her daughter.

In January, the body of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, 20, was found burned and buried in the backyard of a fellow Marine. She was eight months pregnant.

“She gave her life for her child and I’ll never forget that,” Lauterbach told News Center 7’s Carol Han.

Lauterbach said she also can’t forget the warning signs the Marines ignored after Maria reported being raped. During her testimony, Lauterbach explained that her daughter’s car had been vandalized and Maria had been punched in the face, but the Marines failed to take these events seriously.

“Maria had asked…”I would like to be transferred from Camp Lejeune. They said don't bother. It's not going to happen,” Lauterbach said.

Lauterbach is now supporting a bill introduced by Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, that calls on the Pentagon to devise a comprehensive strategy to combat military sexual assault and rape. She also wants servicewomen to have the right to a base transfer and quicker prosecution of rape cases.

Lauterbach’s frustration was echoed by members of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reforms.

“When it comes to sexual assault in the military, the DoD has no credibility. Absolutely none. Zero. Zip,” said Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn.

Lawmakers’ frustration level hit a high point when the person in charge of the Pentagon’s sexual assault prevention programs didn’t show up to testify, despite being subpoenaed.

Her boss, Defense Undersecretary Michael Dominguez told lawmakers his superiors didn’t want Dr. Kaye Whitley to testify.

“If you find the department’s efforts fall short of expectations, responsibility for that shortfall rests with me,” said Rodriguez.

“That’s a ridiculous answer!” said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif. “I don’t know what you’re trying to cover up here, but we’re not going to allow it!”

Dominguez was dismissed without giving his testimony.
