Off-Duty Officer Foils Springfield Bank Robbery

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

A bank robbery Thursday ended in gunfire after a Springfield police officer, working security at the bank on Sunset Avenue, reportedly fired his weapon to stop a robbery in progress.

Authorities said after firing the shot, the officer reportedly wrestled a knife away from the suspect and foiled the robbery attempt at the Huntington Bank.

Police said an off-duty officer, in uniform, was working security inside the bank when he observed a man come in who seemed to conduct business as usual but then drew a knife on the teller and demanded money.

Investigators said the officer then drew his weapon and ordered the man to drop the knife. Police said the man refused the order and lunged at the officer. They said there was a struggle during which the officer's weapon discharged.

Authorities said the man dropped the knife. They said no one was injured during the attempted robbery and struggle.

The bank closed while police conducted their investigation forcing customers to put their business on hold.
