Dayton shooting victim expected to survive

DAYTON —

Police said the incident that resulted with a woman found on Third Street Saturday evening with a gunshot wound to her shoulder had its roots in a dispute on Westwood Avenue.

The woman — still in her vehicle — flagged down an officer around 1819 W. Third St. around 8 p.m. Saturday saying she’d been shot. According to a Dayton police report, the reporting officer said, “I observed the rear driver’s side window was shattered and the four occupants were yelling for me to stop.”

The driver, a 31-year-old woman, was found to have an open gunshot wound to her left shoulder. She was eventually taken to Miami Vally Hospital. Her injury was not considered life-threatening.

As more police crews arrived, a passenger in the car said she went to 154 Westwood Ave. to gather some clothes when she got into an argument with her boyfriend. According to the report, she said as she was getting into the back of a car, her boyfriend approached with a gun and fired three shots into the vehicle, hitting the driver once. The vehicle sped off.

The boyfriend who allegedly fired the shots has not been arrested, according to jail records. His girlfriend had been living with his mother, according to the report, while he lives with his father on Brooklyn Avenue.

Officers responded to the Brooklyn Avenue address and found a 12-gauge shotgun in the suspect’s room. The father said to police he had been watching football with his son for much of the day when he abruptly left. He said he had no idea his son was accused of being involved in a shooting.

The incident remains under investigation.
