Orange barrel alert: I-75 lane closures set

Staff Report

MORAINE —

Motorists planning to use Interstate 75 should prepare for lane and ramp closures that will slow traffic beginning Friday after business hours and on weekends.

One lane north and south, between Ohio 725 and Dryden Road, will be closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and every day until Thursday, Sept. 27, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

Two lanes in each direction will be closed each day from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to ODOT.

Additionally, rolling road blocks will be occurring from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and there will be short-term ramp closures at the Dixie Drive exit beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, according to ODOT.

The closures are necessary to accommodate ongoing construction, and the traffic patterns are not expected to change again until the end of the I-75 widening project in 2014, according to ODOT.

The Ohio Highway Patrol will be monitoring traffic flow in the area, which is near the site of a fatal crash that occurred July 13. That crash was one of two that occurred within minutes of each other and resulted in injuries after motorists became confused by the configuration of orange barrels along that stretch of the interstate and mistakenly drove down a closed lane, crashing into a large ditch in the highway.

Arrow boards and signs will be in place to alert motorists of the upcoming closures. ODOT advises motorists to be alert, slow down and watch for stopped traffic while passing through work zones.
