OSP Faces Budget Cuts

The Ohio State Highway Patrol could be facing cuts.

A 16-member task force started meeting this month, looking for ways to improve the patrol’s efficiency, which could include cutting duplicated service and the consolidation of some operations.

The task force has until July 1, 2010, to submit recommendations to Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and the Ohio legislature.

The patrol has had budget concerns since 2004 when legislators approved a four-year phaseout of using gas tax revenues to fund the agency.

Next year, the patrol has a combined budget of $636 million. The highway patrol has lost 55 posts across the state and more then 1,500 troopers.
