TROTWOOD —
A 30-year-old Dayton man was struck and killed by an SUV early Sunday morning while he was walking in the south bound lanes of Salem Avenue, north of Olive Road.
Henry Jones, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
“He was wearing all black clothing; black coat, black pants and black shoes,” said Sgt. Chris Colbert with the OSP Dayton Post. “It’s not like it’s a well-lit area, so basically if you’re walking in the roadway in dark clothing, bad things can happen.”
According to Colbert, Jones also was the driver of a vehicle that crashed through the ‘Welcome to Trotwood’ sign at the intersection of Westbrook Road and Salem Avenue sometime before the fatal pedestrian crash. Jones’ silver car smashed through the sign, cracking it in half.
After crashing his vehicle at the intersection of Westbrook and Salem, Jones reportedly left his car unattended and began walking south on Salem, Colbert said.
Around 1 a.m. emergency responders received reports of a victim being struck by a 2006 Buick Rendezvous, which was driven by Shiquita Jones, 23, of Clayton, according to OSP. Troopers said they do not expect to file any charges against Shiquita, who was not injured during the collision.
State troopers also said they received reports that Henry had been drinking at a nearby bar earlier in the evening. A toxicology test will be performed by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office to determine if there was any alcohol in Henry’s system, but they do suspect it had an involvement, Colbert said.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by officers from the Trotwood and Clayton police departments, as well as deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Trotwood Fire and EMS also assisted during the investigation.
Following the tragic events this morning, Colbert hopes many people learn from the accident.
“You’re much better off staying at the scene of the initial crash than walking away and ending up getting hit and killed as a pedestrian,” Colbert said. “Any penalties that you may face for any traffic violation isn’t anything compared to that.”
