MIAMI COUNY —

A man died after he was hit by a tree limb while cutting down trees in Miami County.

The incident happened just before 10:30 a.m. today on Troy-Sidney Road just north of Rusk Road. CareFlight was initially put on standby, but was later canceled.

Jerry L. Jackson Jr., 51, of Union Twp., died in the incident, according to the the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. He started working for the county in the mid-1980s.

“One of the trees was cut and rolled,” said sheriff’s deputy Eric Harnish. “Some of the limbs from that tree hit one of the county workers and he sustained a severe head injury.”

Authorities will continue to look into the incident. Harnish said Jackson was wearing the proper safety gear.

“We’re still investigating, but it appears at this point it was an accident,” said sheriff’s Lt. Thomas Wheeler. “The tree turned the wrong way when it went to fall.”
