Pharmacy’s Ohio license suspended after outbreak

COLUMBUS —

The Massachusetts specialty pharmacy being blamed for a deadly meningitis outbreak has had their license to distribute in Ohio suspended.

The Ohio State Board of Pharmacy Director Kyle Parker announced today the summary suspension of New England Compounding Center’s Ohio Terminal Distributor of Dangerous Drugs license.

Parker said in discussions with the Ohio Department of Health and in light of an investigation conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration it was determined “there was clear and convincing evidence that the continuation of New England Compounding Center’s professional practice presented a danger of immediate and serious harm to others,” according to a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

Contaminated methylprednisolone acetate injections distributed by the company have allegedly resulted in a fungal meningitis outbreak that has affected people in nine states and left eight people dead. These allegedly contaminated methylprednisolone acetate injections were administered to approximately 430 people in Ohio.
