Piqua student detained for gun comment

By Katie Wedell

PIQUA —

A Piqua High School Student was taken into police custody this afternoon after he said he had a gun on a school bus.

Piqua City Schools Superintendent Rick Hanes confirmed the incident Monday afternoon, which occurred on a bus taking junior high and high school students home.

The 14-year-old student told others that he had a gun. The bus driver pulled over on Garbry Road and called police, Hanes said.

Police took the teen into custody and he will be charged with delinquency by reason of inducing panic, a first-degree misdemeanor according to Chief Bruce Jamison.

No weapon was found on the bus or in the student’s possession.

“He apparently thought it would be funny to say this,” Jamison said.

Hanes said, “There is no indication that there was intent to harm.” He called the student’s actions a “poor choice.”

The high school principal was notified and will decide on disciplinary action for that student, who Hanes said will not be in school Tuesday. Jamison said the teen was released to the custody of his family.

Hanes said all school rules apply on school buses. Disciplinary action will depend largely on the context of the comment. “At this point it does not appear that it was in the context of a threat,” he said.
