Police: Baby's Death Ruled Homicide

TROY, Ohio —

Police in Troy announced Tuesday that the death of an 8-month-old baby was a homicide. The baby boy was found Monday not breathing at his home.

"The Miami County Coroner’s Office found that the boy died from multiple blunt force trauma," said Troy police Capt. Chris Anderson.

Anderson said authorities do not know how long the boy had been dead when his mother called 911

So far, the baby's parents have been charged with child endangering. However, police said evidence in the case will now go to the prosecutor's office where additional charges could be added.

Jason Durig, 29, and Tara, 27, appeared before a judge in Miami County Tuesday morning and was arraigned on the charges.

Troy police said 8-month-old Calab, was found dead inside the couple's apartment at 1251 Hilltop Drive.

"A call came into 911 that the child was unresponsive," said Capt. Christopher Anderson.

According to court documents, the baby suffered facial bruises to the forehead, cheek and on the leg that appeared to have been caused by biting. The documents also stated that Calab had an open wound on his face, ligature marks around his neck and blood coming from his nose.

Neither parent made a statement during the video arraignment from the Miami County Jail. Bond was set for both at $50,000 and they7 are due back in court Aug. 3 for a preliminary hearing.

Jason Durig, according to court records, spent time in jail for child endangering in the past. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison in June 2007 after a 1-month-old baby was scalded while Durig was giving the child a bath. That incident happened in Piqua in February 2007.

Neighbors on Hilltop Drive told WHIO-TV that they often heard Calab crying.

Theresa Miller said, "If they needed help, or couldn't do it on their own, they could have asked us and anyone would have helped."

Neighbors held a candlelight vigil Monday night in front of the apartment where Calab died.
