Police Investigate Assault On 6-Week-Old Baby

GREENVILLE, Ohio —

Police in Greenville are investigating an assault against a baby.

Officers are not saying much, but when it comes to a crime against a child, they said bringing someone to justice is a top priority.

Detective Eric Roberts said, "Anytime it deals with a child, yes, and obviously there's going to be emotions involved and emotions from everyone involved."

At just 6-weeks-old, the child should have been home for his first Christmas. Instead, he will be in the hospital suffering from serious injuries. Police were tipped off by employees of Wayne Health Care.

"On Tuesday evening around 9:30, Greenville police were called to the Wayne Hospital ER on an injured 6-week-old male child," said Roberts.

Authorities said the baby's father and relatives took him to the emergency room with injuries. Even though police would not tell the extend of the injuries, they were serious enough that the baby was transferred to Children's Medical Center in Dayton, where he is in serious condition.

Roberts said, "We're looking at everything around the life of that child and everyone around him."

Police have not said who was watching the baby when the injuries happened, but they said there are several people they want to interview.

Marcia Weidner has three children of her own and she cannot imagine anyone hurting an innocent child.

"It's terrible, sad to think that's it's happening here," said Weidner. "There's nothing more precious than a new baby, and at Christmastime, it makes it even more unacceptable, I guess."

As the baby recovers in the hospital, Greenville police said they will continue their investigation by talking with friends and family members.
