WARREN CO., Ohio —

A woman remains in critical condition Thursday following a plane crash Wednesday near the Warren County Airport.

Katherine Bowles, 30, was among those injured when a small aircraft — a Piper 28 — crashed around 4 p.m. near Mulford and Greentree roads, shortly after its takeoff, according to Ohio Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Sanders.

The plane was carrying four people from Colorado. The pilot is identified as Zeb Bowles, 32.

Katherine Bowles was taken by medical helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital where she remains in the intensive care unit.

Zeb Bowles, and passengers Wilson Bowles, 22, and Zachary Bowles, 30, were taken to Atrium Medical Center for minor injuries.

The men are all brothers. Zeb and Zachary Bowles are listed in fair condition; Wilson Bowles was transferred out of the hospital.

“They noticed a compartment door open so they were circling back, and (Zeb) lost control. He went through a split in the power lines, and hit on the nose of the plane. It was on fire, but put out quickly,” Sanders said.

Sanders said it was on the pilot’s second attempt to land that he crashed.

Elizabeth Isham Cory, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the FAA is investigating the accident, which typically takes months to conclude.

“It’s impossible to say at this point if any violations will results,” Cory said.

Cory said the FAA oversees the Federal Aviation Regulations created to ensure safety of flight. The FAA has regulatory responsibility for all areas under the FARs, such as manufacturing of the aircraft and its components, licensing and maintenance of the aircraft, and licensing and training of the pilot, according to Cory.

Sanders said the FAA is conducting an independent investigation into the crash, but the state patrol will provide them with their report and photographers.

“They are out there today to go through wreckage and look for anything that indicates an equipment failure,” Sanders said.

Sanders said Zeb Bowles is a fairly new pilot, only having his pilot’s license for three months.

“(The FAA) will take a pretty critical look at what he said (happened),” Sanders said.

Numerous fire departments responded to the location.

Residents who live near the scene said they saw the plane come down.

A witness said the plane was low when one wing clipped a treetop, then the other wing hit a utility pole, and the plane hit the ground and rolled end over end. The plane came to rest in an empty lot between two houses, about a quarter mile from the airport, Sanders said.

“It’s crazy it would happen this close,” said Justin Doyle, who lives nearby. “Planes fly over our heads all the time here.”

Residents said they lost electricity to their homes because of damage caused by the crash.
