Richmond Schools to draw new elementary lines

RICHMOND, Indiana —

Changes are coming to Richmond Community Schools as the board approves district-wide restructuring.

New lines for Elementary schools and new grades at other buildings are putting parents and administrators to work.

The school board approved the changes to elementary lines on Wednesday night. The superintendent told News Center 7 that the district started working Thursday to make sure that parents and students will be able to deal with them.

Parents in the district said change is hard, especially when it comes to closing schools and moving children to new ones.

Kia Fox said, "It's said, but I think it's more of an inconvenience for a lot of people because there's different districts and things like that."

On Wednesday night, the school board gave final approval to a redistricting plan for Richmond's six elementary buildings.

Superintendent Dr. Allen Bourff said with the closing of three  elementary schools, things will be different for a lot of students.

"Some new very new lines others have been slightly moved," he said.

The redistricting plan is part of a larger plan that moves grades five through 8 into two intermediate buildings and consolidates some programs at another building.

Bourff said the district has to adapt to fallen enrollment numbers.

"We need a critical mass at every grade level to offer greatest variety of services in buildings where there is no critical mass, we're not operating as we should for the benefit of students," Bourff said.

The district will send letters home to all students in the next two weeks that will explain the new elementary lines.

Along with parent-teacher conferences, by the end of the school year, the district plans to notify every parent of the changes, steps that Bourff thinks will improve education for everyone.

Students can transfer to another school in the district if there are seats available.
