MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio —

Shaky economic times are not stopping development in Miami Township.

The Montgomery County Road Department is expanding several streets to support a retail giant’s latest expansion.

In addition to all of the activity at the Wal-Mart site, the county is about to start a huge road project to widen the streets.

Robert Hoag, Director of Engineering for the Montgomery County Transportation District, is heading up a project that impacts the roads behind the Dayton Mall. It includes widening Kingsridge Drive and Lyonsridge Road.

A Super Wal-Mart is currently under construction and is expected to be finished next March.

Officials plan to have four lanes of traffic and new right-turn lanes. Hoag said they also plan to add sidewalks and decorative streetlights.

There will also be a couple of new stoplights, including one at Kingsridge Drive and Lyonsridge. Lyonsridge will be realigned to match up with the entrance to the Miami Township offices and emergency services.

The project is expected to cost $1.7 million. The road project is scheduled to be done March 11, 2009 and the new Wal-Mart store is scheduled to completed at the same time.

Township officials said they are working with the owners of a shopping center that includes the Wal-Mart, to get some new tenants.
