Staff Report

MIAMI TOWNSHIP —

Police are out in full force this Labor Day weekend. They are taking part in saturation patrols, designed to find drunk and impaired drivers.

Police departments get special grants for these patrols, and officers give up their holiday weekend to take part in the patrols.

News Center 7’s John Bedell rode Saturday night with Sgt. Jason Kramer from the Miami Township Police Department.

“We have more indulgence in alcohol on holiday weekends,” he said.

Kramer said there are certain characteristics which indicate whether or not a driver might be intoxicated.

One driver was stopped for trying to beat the red light at Lamb Road and Alex Bell Road. He was not drunk, but received a ticket anyway.

Kramer stopped another driver on southbound I-75 for not signaling while merging lanes. She was not drinking either, and received a warning ticket.

“We are gonna be out here, we are gonna be looking for OVIs, and we are gonna be arresting the OVIs we find,” said Sgt. Kramer.

Kramer said a successful Labor Day weekend will be one with no crashes.
