SCLC National Convention Highlights MLK Principals

DAYTON, Ohio —

Officials said an estimated 5,000 people are in Dayton this week attending the annual Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s national convention.

Organizers said this year’s conference is attracting some big name speakers to the Miami Valley.

This year’s theme is Restoring Our Movement and people who are in town for the event said it’s about getting back to the basic principals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who founded the organization decades ago.

Martin Luther King III said the work that his father started continues even in Dayton at this year’s convention.

Rev. Al Sharpton is one of several who is a featured speaker for the conference. He said restoring the movement depends on the next generation.

There are also a lot of teens attending the convention. On Monday, there was a teen workshop that featured Keith Byars, Vince Bailey, Tye Muhammad, Kim Hutchinson

In fact, there are events and forums designed especially for the youth element. Organizers said it is important for them to take an active role.

A vendor’s village, workshops for both children and adults, lectures, classes, luncheons and dinners are all taking place at the Dayton Convention Center.

The conference runs through Wednesday.
