Sen. Brown to visit Middletown this week

MIDDLETOWN —

Sen. Sherrod Brown will bring his campaign for re-election to the IAM Local 1943 Hall on Wednesday.

Brown will be talking about jobs, and how he differs from his November election opponent, Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, according to his campaign.

“Sherrod looks forward to talking about his work to stand up for the 850,000 auto-industry related jobs in Ohio, including many in Middletown,” said campaign spokeswoman Sadie Weiner, “and how that contrasts with Josh Mandel, who opposes the auto rescue and even went so far as to call Sherrod un-American for supporting it.”

Brown has “fought tirelessly” to keep jobs in Ohio, said Ronnie Wardrup, vice chair of the Butler County Democratic Party.

Gates for the rally for Brown will open at 3 p.m. at the union hall at 1100 Crawford St. It’s being organized by union officials and the Butler County Democratic Party.

“It’s important for the people in Middletown to know that Sherrod’s on their side,” said Wardrup. “We’re going to set the record straight on where he stands on issues in Ohio.”

Wardrup said Brown will likely talk about how AK Steel is producing the steel for the undercarriage of the Chevy Cruze, which is being built in Lordstown, Ohio, northwest of Youngstown.

The Middletown rally is important, said Wardrup, because the city and county will be a battleground area in the race against Mandel.

Brown leads Mandel in three polls. He is 7 percentage points ahead in the Fox News and NBC News/WallStreet Journal/Marist College polls, and 8 percentage points ahead in the Public Policy Poll. However, between 9 percent and 11 percent of Ohio voters are undecided in this race.

The balance of power in the U.S. Senate could shift this November. The Democrats have the majority of the 100-member Senate by six. However with 33 Senate seats up this November and a third will not have an incumbent seeking re-election. Ten senators (six Democrats, three Republicans and one independent) will retire and one senator did not win in the primary election.

Officials with Mandel’s campaign said they are planning a campaign event soon in Southwest Ohio, but details are still being worked out. Mandel was in Warren County earlier this month at the Warren County GOP headquarters.

The general election is Nov. 6 and early voting in Ohio begins Oct. 2.
