Sewage backs up into Urbana apartments

URBANA —

Residents of an Urbana apartment complex are complaining to the city’s health department after they said feces and toilet paper backed up into their apartments.

The problem began on Saturday at the Urbana Village Apartments in the 1000 block of High Street, according to residents. They said they called the health department when management failed to take care of the problem.

Representatives with the health department said the apartment complex needs to deal with the problem immediately, noting it is a health hazard. The apartment complex did call a contractor, and they were seen cleaning pipes today.

The contractor, which is now working with the health department, said that a pump that pumps sewage out of the lift station is missing, which is causing the problem. The health department said they will ask the apartment complex to present a plan of action as to how they are handling the problem and how they plan to prevent it in the future.
