From assault to disorderly conduct

SIDNEY, Ohio —

A former Shelby County corrections officer pleaded no contest Monday after she was charged for allegedly punching an inmate.

Teresa McElfresh, 59, pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, a fourth degree misdemeanor, according to the Sidney Municipal Court.

Investigators said McElfresh twice punched a restrained inmate who allegedly spit at two other officers.

The case has been continued pending a presentence investigation ordered by the Judge prior to sentencing.

McElfresh, who resigned after the incident, was originally charged with assault and faced a maximum sentence of six months in jail and $1,000 fine.
