SHELBY COUNTY, Ohio —

A distinguished list of current presidents, former presidents and nominees have visited Shelby County from May of 1912 to October of 2012.

The list includes: May 16, 1912, former President Theodore Roosevelt addressed a large crowd on the steps of the Shelby County Courthouse in Sidney.

May 23, 1912, President William Howard Taft was the first sitting president to visit Sidney.  He too spoke from the courthouse steps.

October 11, 1948, (64 years ago on this date) over 1000 people gathered to hear Harry S. Truman, a Democrat, proclaim that Sidney has "elbow grease and we need that for continued prosperity."  He arrived by train.

October 12, 1984 (28 years ago) on the same tracks at the North Street crossing in Sidney, President Ronald Reagan stopped.  Numerous times the crowds interrupted Reagan's campaign speech by chanting, "Four more years!"

August 28, 2004, President George W. Bush was in Troy for a rally. His motorcade stopped at the Spot Restaurant in downtown Sidney as they were enroute to Lima.

October 10, 2012, an estimated 9000 people braved the fall chill for a campaign rally with Republican Presidential Nominee Governor Mitt Romney at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

With the exception of the Shelby County Fairgrounds, all of the above presidential related campaign stops are remembered with historical markers that were installed by the Shelby County Historical Society.  One is expected to be erected at a later date at the Shelby County Fairgrounds for the Romney visit.
