Social Security: $250 Bonus Coming

Extra Payment Arriving In Spring

By Jim Otte

DAYTON, Ohio —

Richard Bowens anxiously watched the Congressional deliberations on the federal stimulus bill.

He was excited to hear that he and millions of other people on Social Security are in line to receive a special one-time bonus of $250.

“I’m happy about it. There are 50 million people on Social Security and I think it will help the economy greatly by each recipient getting a $250 bonus,” Bowens said.

Bowens said he already plans to pay some bills once he has the cash in hand.

Theresa Busher, Public Affairs Special with the Social Security Administration office in Dayton, said the money will be going out as soon as possible.

“We are hoping to get these payments out by the end of May so that all beneficiaries will be receiving them by late May or early June, 2009,” Busher said.

Busher said if people receive their regular monthly payment by check, then the bonus payment will also come by check. Likewise, she said if a person has direct deposit, the bonus will also arrive by direct deposit.

The payments are scheduled to go to all adults on Social Security retirement, survivor benefits or disability.

Busher said there are approximately 250,000 people on social security in the Dayton region.
