Sons Find Their Mother Dead After Apartment Fire

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio —

An early morning fire claimed the life of a Springfield woman and now investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire and her death.

The fire started around 1:30 a.m. inside an apartment at 103 Brent Drive in Clark County.

The victim has been identified as 64-year-old Janice Haynes. Investigators said Haynes activated her life line around 1:30 a.m. and told an operator she had fallen and needed help.

The victim’s two sons rushed to her apartment. Authorities said when Haynes’ sons got inside, the apartment was filled with smoke. One of her sons crawled to the kitchen and found Haynes lying on the floor.

Investigators said the victim’s son started CPR and within minutes medics arrived and took Haynes to a Springfield hospital, where she pronounced dead.

Authorities said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but they believe the fire started in a chair inside the living room and spread to some nearby curtains.

Authorities from the Clark County sheriff’s office and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating.
