Special License Plates Sought For Sex Offenders

Murder Victim’s Family Launches Campaign For New Law

COLUMBUS, Ohio —

Sharon Jackson fought back tears at the Ohio Statehouse Wednesday. It came as sheand her family launched a campaign to change state law.

They are seeking passage of “Kristen’s Law,” to require sex offenders to have special, bright green license plates on their cars or trucks.

Jackson’s 14 year-old daughter, Kristen, was kidnapped and murdered by a convicted sex offender in Summit County.

The family said requiring special plates would help people, especially children, identify who the convicted sex offenders are lurking in their neighborhoods.

Jackson said, “It’s been such a difficult time. It’s a struggle every day. This way we can represent Kristen in a way that her life will go on. If we can save another person, that is one thing we can be thankful for as a family.”

If a majority of lawmakers support the measure, it would make Ohio the first state in the nation to adopt the special plates for sex offenders.

Sen. Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek, said Wednesday more legislation will soon be introduced. Among the other new restrictions being considered are plans for longer prison sentences for convicted sex offenders and electronic monitoring for violent and repeat offenders.

A recent Newscenter Seven investigation found the number of convicted sex offenders in the Miami Valley is on the rise. Montgomery County alone has more than 900 sex offenders registered with the sheriff.
