SPRINGFIELD —
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that possibly injured multiple people outside a union hall early Sunday morning.
According to Sheriff Gene Kelly, approximately 40 bullets were fired outside the Local 402 United Auto Worker’s lodge, 3671 Urbana Road, at about 2 a.m.
Sheriff’s deputies were alerted to the shooting when one victim, a 19-year-old man, drove himself to an address in Springfield and told police there that he’d been shot at the union hall in Moorefield Township.
Emergency dispatchers received several calls from residents on Urbana Road who reported hearing multiple gunshots, according to a report.
When deputies arrived at the hall they observed as many as 75 people quickly leaving the scene in vehicles. Bullet casings were found in the parking lot and several bullets had struck the building and a parked car, according to the report.
“Almost 40 rounds of ammunition were discharged and vehicles shot, tires shot, building shot, people shot,” Kelly said.
The 19-year-old victim, who was shot in the leg, was treated at Springfield Regional Hospital.
Kelly said there were reportedly two other people who suffered gunshot wounds, but they were not cooperating with police.
Just over a year ago, police made an arrest connected to an October 2011 party at the union hall that got out of hand and led to a police pursuit of a suspect.
At that time Sherry McManamay, who booked the 2011 party, said the union had just started renting the hall to the public six months before and would be rethinking their policies on renting to non-members. She described the hall as a “disaster” as the party-goers left trash, beer cans, blood and other bodily fluids all over the building.
Saturday night’s party was registered by an unidentified UAW member.
