Casino revenues down, compared to December

By Joanne Huist Smith

Two of Ohio’s three casinos saw slight revenue gains in January, but totals for the state overall fell short of December earnings. The Ohio Casino Control Commission report released Thursday reflects January gaming revenue from venues in Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo.

Penn National Gaming, Inc. — the company proposing a racino for Dayton — operates Hollywood Casino Toledo and Hollywood Casino Columbus. Caesars Entertainment owns the Horseshoe Cleveland Casino. Ohio’s fourth casino, the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati, is scheduled to open March 4.

Ohio gamblers continue to favor slot machines over table games, according to the revenue figures.

Adjusted gross revenue for all casinos — the money received by casino operators less winnings paid to patrons — tallied $53.2 million. That’s about $3.4 million short of the December statewide total.

“It’s hard to look at the numbers from month to month and find a trend,” Tama Davis, spokeswoman for the Ohio Casino Control Commission said. “Once the fourth casino opens in March and all four casinos have been open for a year, we’ll have a better basis to make comparisons.”

The Hollywood casinos each had slim gains over December revenue, while the Cleveland casino’s fell by about $3.8 million. Cleveland still had the highest adjusted gross revenue of the three at $20,663,522.

Gamers dropped nearly $404 million into 6,901 slot machines in January, about $631,659 more than in December. Just over $84 million was played at 305 table games, compared to $92.9 million the month before.

The Ohio Lottery Commission also released revenue figures for video lottery terminals at the Scioto Downs in Columbus. Gamblers wagered nearly $120.8 million on lottery terminals at the racino in January, which had a 91.59 percent payout.
