Stretch Of Cedarville Highway To Be Reconstructed

CEDARVILLE, Ohio —

Cedarville residents have complained enough about a dangerous stretch of road that something is now being done about it.

However, the work on Route 72 will not be done right away.

Numerous crashes have happened along the stretch of roadway on Route 72, including the most recent on Friday.

Kim Leach, whose parents live on Route 72, said they have seen numerous vehicles, such as an armored car that crashed on Friday, end up in their front yard.

Leach said, “Once you lose control in the ditches, there is no getting back on the road whatsoever.”

Two months ago, a semi carrying McDonald’s food tipped over in the same spot as the armored car did last Friday.

News Center 7 has learned that between 2004 and 2006, there have been 26 crashes on that particular stretch of Route 72. The Ohio Department of Transportation said 22 of the 26 vehicles ended up off the road.

News Center 7 called the District 8 office of ODOT and learned that plans are in the works to help fix the stretch of roadway.

ODOT said Route 72 from the Route 35 westbound ramps to a culvert just north of Klontz Road will be reconstructed in the year 2013.

Sharon Smigielski with ODOT said, “The roadway will be widened 12 feet in lengths with 4 foot shoulders on each side and a 4 foot grassy area will be added which means the ditches will be moved out a bit.”

Two curves on the road will also be straightened. The project is expected to cost $800,000. It is a large amount of money, but News Center 7 was told that the project will be paid for using gas tax money.

Many, including workers with ODOT, consider the project a good investment.

The reason the project is not being done right away is that the money is not available until 2013.
