Taft Authorizes National Guard For Hurricane Assistance

COLUMBUS, Ohio —

Ohio Gov. Bob Taft on Wednesday authorized 1,500 Ohio National Guard troops to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims. The units will be assigned to provide security and general support in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Units that will be deployed to assist include the 371st Corps Support Group from Kettering and the 269th Combat Communications Squadron from Springfield.

The governor said in a statement, "Hurricane Katrina has left a wake of devastation behind and we must do whatever we can to assist our fellow citizens during this time of need, I have called on our National Guard to provide much-needed support for families and communities in the Gulf states and we'll stand ready to assist however necessary."
