Taft Awaits Gun Bill

Showdown With Lawmakers Expected

COLUMBUS,Ohio —

Gov. Bob Taft said he will veto a controversial gun bill passed by state lawmakers Wednesday. The bill sets new rules for people handling their weapons while in cars.

The bill eliminates a provision of the old concealed carry law that requires drivers to keep their weapons out in the open or in a lock box. Under the new rules a driver could carry a gun concealed beneath their clothing.

State Sen. Jim Jordan of Urbana said the old law was “troublesome” and the new rules would streamline the regulatory process. In reaction, State Sen. Eric Fingerhut of Cleveland said it would eliminate local ordinances in Dayton and many other cities around Ohio.

Supporters of the new gun law are looking into a possible veto override if the Governor makes good on his plan.
