Teen Dad Accused Of Beating Baby Daughter

BELLBROOK, Ohio —

Prosecutors said they are seeking felony criminal charges against a teenage father who beat his infant daughter.

Six-month-old Callie Koval was rushed to Dayton Children's Medical Center after authorities said her father beat her in the head Friday night in Sugarcreek Township.

Hospital officials said the baby remains in critical condition.

As for her father, prosecutors said 19-year-old Shawn Koval has a history of violence and that alcohol seemed to fuel his anger that night.

Koval appeared in a Xenia courtroom Monday morning for his arraignment and found out that the initial charges against him were dropped.

Ronald Lewis, Xenia Law Director, said, "I dismissed the assault charge at the request of police department because we are going to pursue felony charges against him today."

Prosecutors said Koval was babysitting his infant daughter Callie, while her mother was at work. They said he was drinking and has a temper and at some point, he lashed out at his own child.

Sugarcreek Township police Sgt. Mark White said, "The baby has sustained two skull fractures as well as a head bleed."

Callie Koval was rushed to the hospital where she remains in the ICU in critical condition with what authorities described as severe head trauma.

Koval already served jail time for threatening the baby's mother and prosecutors asked the judge to keep him behind bars while they continue to build their case.

The judge set bond at $10,000. Officials said he will likely be arraigned on more serious charges on Tuesday.
